One size fits all

One Size Fits All

July 1

When it comes to massage therapy, the idea that “one size fits all” doesn’t quite apply. What’s remarkable about massage therapy is that most programs follow a similar structure, with the five basic strokes at the core, but each massage therapist brings their own unique style to the table. Additionally, by incorporating different modalities, the art of massage truly comes alive. However, what feels amazing to one client may not be the same for another, and how one therapist approaches deep tissue massage may differ from the next. So, how can you decide whether to stick with a particular massage therapist or not?

Let’s start by discussing your needs for this session. Do you exercise frequently or have a physically demanding job? Are you dealing with anxiety, depression, or an autoimmune disease that causes fatigue or discomfort? Or are you simply looking for some time to unwind? Understanding your needs will help determine the most suitable type of massage for you.

Firstly, it's time to book your massage appointment. With five different massage practices located within five miles of your home, you're sure to find one that fits your budget. It's a good idea to shop around and compare prices and services offered.

Their Philosophies

Keep in mind that different massage practices may have different philosophies and mission statements. It's worth visiting their website to learn more about their approach to massage therapy.

The Chain Spa

If you're looking for a cheaper option, you might consider a chain spa that offers discounted sessions for members. However, these spas may also have shorter session times and therapists who see multiple clients per day. On the other hand, chain spas tend to have longer hours and may be open seven days a week, making it easier to fit your appointment into your schedule.

Private Massage Practices

Is it a private practice that only takes clients by appointment? With this option, you can enjoy a full 60 minutes of hands-on time without feeling rushed to get on or off the table. While it may cost more per session, there is often a familial relationship between the therapist and the client. It’s recommended to try both options, but starting with a private practice may be best. Because they see fewer clients in a day, they work hard to ensure each client feels welcome and comfortable.

In-Home Massage

Did you know that there are massage therapists who can come to you for your session? This is a convenient option for people who have busy schedules filled with appointments, meetings, and family events. It may be expensive, but it's worth it if you struggle to make time for yourself. However, it's important to be cautious when choosing this option. You can use apps that perform background checks to ensure that the therapist's license and insurance are up to date.

Booking the Session

After booking a massage session, it is important to observe certain factors to determine if the massage therapist is suitable for you. One such factor is whether or not they conduct a client intake before the session. This intake helps the massage therapist plan their session by obtaining your medical history and identifying areas to focus on or avoid during the massage. It is recommended to avoid therapists who skip this important step and immediately ask you to get on the table without discussing your expectations and needs for the session.

During the Session

During your massage session, please feel free to communicate with your therapist. This is your time to relax and enjoy the experience. If you are feeling uncomfortable or if the pressure is too much or too little, let your therapist know so they can make adjustments to suit your preferences. They will not be offended if you ask for a change. You may require additional support, such as pillows or bolsters, to help you relax comfortably on the massage table. Additionally, if the room temperature is too hot or too cold, please inform your therapist so they can make the necessary adjustments. Remember, it is important to speak up if there is anything that will impede your enjoyment of the session. Your therapist can make changes to ensure that you have a pleasant experience and are motivated to return.

Feed back

It’s important to provide honest feedback to your therapist when your sessions come to an end. Instead of simply never booking another appointment with them and seeking out a new therapist, consider giving them a chance to learn and improve. I typically give my therapist two chances to address any issues I may have. If they are unable to resolve the issue, then it may be time to consider finding a new therapist.

Incorporating massage into your routine can bring numerous benefits. However, I often hear people say they didn’t enjoy it after trying it once. I don’t think it’s a matter of not liking it, but rather not connecting with the therapist. Massage can benefit everyone who receives it, as long as you find the right massage therapist.
